AIP Visa Investment FAQs

Common questions about the Active Investor Plus visa and qualifying investments

What is AIP in New Zealand?

AIP stands for Active Investor Plus, New Zealand's resident visa program for investors — internationally often called the NZ golden visa. Under the April 2025 settings, offshore investors gain New Zealand residency by investing NZD $5 million in approved growth investments for 36 months (Growth category) or NZD $10 million across a wider asset pool for 60 months (Balanced category).

Is the AIP visa the same as the New Zealand golden visa?

Yes. "Golden visa" is the informal international term for residency-by-investment programmes; Active Investor Plus (AIP) is the official Immigration New Zealand name for New Zealand's version. If you have been researching golden visa options across countries, the AIP visa is New Zealand's programme.

What is the minimum investment to get PR in New Zealand through AIP?

The minimum investment for New Zealand permanent residency through the AIP visa is NZD $5 million for the Growth category (invested in NZTE-approved managed funds) or NZD $10 million for the Balanced category (with more flexible investment options including bonds and equities).

What funds qualify for the AIP visa in New Zealand?

Funds that qualify for the AIP Growth category must be pre-approved by NZ Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and focus on "growth investments" that create economic benefit. This includes venture capital, private equity, and growth-focused managed funds. The NZTE maintains an official list of acceptable managed funds.

What is the difference between AIP Growth and Balanced categories?

Growth category requires $5M in higher-risk growth investments — direct investments or NZTE-listed managed funds (VC, PE, growth equity), with philanthropy capped at 20% — held for 36 months with at least 21 days in New Zealand. Balanced category requires $10M across a wider pool that adds listed equities, bonds and qualifying property developments, held for 60 months with at least 105 days in New Zealand. Growth has stricter investment rules but a lower capital threshold and shorter hold.

How long must I hold AIP investments?

Growth category investments must be held for 36 months (3 years), with at least 21 days spent in New Zealand during that period. Balanced category investments must be held for 60 months (5 years), with at least 105 days in New Zealand — reducible by 14 days per additional NZD $1 million invested in Growth-category assets, to a maximum 42-day reduction. Completing the investment period and days-in-NZ requirement supports a permanent residency application.

How many funds are on the NZTE Acceptable Managed Funds list?

There are 65 funds on the NZTE Acceptable Managed Funds list as at 15 June 2026 (the date NZTE last updated the list), verified by Wholesale Investor on 2 July 2026. NZTE adds and removes funds without notice, so always confirm current eligibility at nzte.govt.nz before investing.

Where can I find the NZTE approved managed funds list?

The official NZTE approved managed funds list is maintained by Invest New Zealand (part of NZTE) at nzte.govt.nz. Fund managers must apply to NZTE to be added to the list. The table on this page reproduces the full list as at 15 June 2026.
