Common questions about the Active Investor Plus visa and qualifying investments
AIP stands for Active Investor Plus, a New Zealand resident visa program introduced in April 2025. It allows offshore investors to gain New Zealand residency by investing NZD $5 million (Growth category) or NZD $10 million (Balanced category) in approved investments for at least 4 years.
The minimum investment for New Zealand permanent residency through the AIP visa is NZD $5 million for the Growth category (invested in NZTE-approved managed funds) or NZD $10 million for the Balanced category (with more flexible investment options including bonds and equities).
Funds that qualify for the AIP Growth category must be pre-approved by NZ Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and focus on "growth investments" that create economic benefit. This includes venture capital, private equity, and growth-focused managed funds. The NZTE maintains an official list of acceptable managed funds.
Growth category requires $5M invested entirely in NZTE-approved growth funds (VC, PE, growth equity). Balanced category requires $10M total, with flexibility to include listed equities and bonds alongside growth investments. Growth has stricter investment rules but lower capital requirement.
AIP investments must be held for a minimum of 4 years. During this period, you must also spend at least 117 days in New Zealand (approximately 29 days per year). After 4 years, you may be eligible for permanent residency.
The official NZTE approved managed funds list is maintained by Invest New Zealand (part of NZTE) at nzte.govt.nz. Fund managers must apply to NZTE to be added to the list. This page shows funds that have indicated AIP eligibility to Wholesale Investor NZ.
