What is New Zealand Business Number (NZBN)?

A unique 13-digit identifier issued to every NZ-registered business entity by the Companies Office.

The New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) is the universal business identifier introduced by the NZBN Act 2016. Every NZ-registered company, limited partnership, charitable trust, incorporated society, sole trader (on application), and government agency receives an NZBN.

Format: 13 digits, the first four being "9429" (the NZ country prefix under ISO 6523).

Why it matters for wholesale investors: the NZBN is the canonical entity identifier across NZ business registers — Companies Office, FSPR, IRD, MBIE. Cross-referencing NZBNs between registers verifies that the entity offering an investment is the same entity holding the regulatory licences and the same entity carrying the operating assets.

How to verify: the public search is at nzbn.govt.nz. Search by NZBN, entity name, or fragments. Each listing shows registered name, entity type, status (Registered / Removed), addresses, key roles, and trade names. Multiple NZBN entries for related entities (e.g. "Hunter Investments Limited", "Hunter Capital Management Limited", "Hunter Fund GP Limited") indicate the corporate structure.

Wholesale Investor NZ usage: provider profile pages link the manager's NZBN to its register entry as primary-source verification. Where multiple related entities exist (parent, manager, GP, fund LP), Wholesale Investor NZ typically links the operating manager entity rather than the fund LP itself, with the relationship noted in internal_notes.citations for transparency.

Common errors: confusion between the NZBN of the manager and the NZBN of the fund LP. The Companies Office searches return both; picking the correct entity matters for accuracy. The "Bridgewest Group" example from Wholesale Investor NZ's own NZBN backfill (ROADMAP #197) illustrates this: 15 related Bridgewest entities exist in the NZBN register, but only the operating manager entity is the right link for a manager profile.

NZBN vs FSP number: the NZBN identifies the legal entity; the FSP number identifies its registration as a financial-service provider. A given entity has exactly one NZBN but may have zero, one, or multiple FSP numbers depending on the services it provides.
